What is Stress?
Stress is the internal response we make to external changes and difficulties, whether real or imaged.
There are many different forms of stress, from environmental, emotional, work related, mental, chemical and nutritional stress. Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies and mind experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment; therefore the physical and emotional effects it has on us, creates positive or negative feelings.
But remember stress is not necessarily bad - it all depends on how we manage it.
For the first time in 2004, work related stress, not back pain, was the number one reason for lost workdays in the UK. The Financial Times suggests stress related illnesses costs British Industry over £3.7 billion every year. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are taking the issue very seriously.
